Lesson Two

Blood Collision

In this lesson, we will learn about the different blood statuses that exist within the Wizarding world, and why there lingers quite a bit of discord among these ranking magical folk.

Let us start with the purebloods.

Pureblood families claim that they have the absolute blood purity. That by no means possible has their completely untainted, super-powerful blood comes in contact with any muggle blood, ever. Whether it be from a muggleborn witch or wizard, a half-blooded witch or wizard, or, even, just a simple, non-magical muggle.

Blood purity, also referred to as 'blood status,' is a merely a concept between magical families that distinguishes each family as being “pure” and “untainted,” thus making them more superior than any other family with blood-lineage that is not completely pure. Within this concept, there are four forms of blood rank: pureblood, half-blood, muggleborn, and squib.

The pureblood families claim that they haven’t mingled their blood with muggle blood, and that their family lineage only holds the purest witch and wizard blood. Ironically enough, they have only managed to convince themselves of this “purity” by removing any family member with muggle blood from their family tree.

Realistically, it is quite safe to say that there really are no true purebloods left in our Wizarding world. Pureblood families also tend to view themselves as royalty throughout the Wizarding world, or, at least, the most elite in their limited culture. It would be foolish to deny that having complete pureblood status is growing more and more difficult in the magical community. Those who claim that they are of a family with only the purest of blood are either completely delusional, brain-washed, or their family has inbred for several centuries. It is simply impossible to maintain the sort of blood status purebloods claim to have with muggles and magical folk intermingling as much as they are in our current era.

For a quick example of what happens when pureblood fanatics inbreed, please remember the tail of morfin Gaunt. Generations of inbreeding in the Gaunt family has caused a defect within Morfin, rendering him an overall violent and deranged individual. Morfin shared the same ideology with his father and liked to torture and hex muggles, without caring about the law, the community, or anyone else, except for his father, whom herespected, because they were bothviolent and pure-blood supremacists.

Now, as mentioned previously, purebloods consider themselves to be superior over all other blood races, so it's not surprising that their attitudes toward muggles, half-bloods, and squibs are completely vile. Purebloods believe that Muggles are practically barbarians, animals even, and that muggleborn witches and wizards are of dirty blood (hence gaining them the derisive nickname of “mudbloods”) and should not be allowed to practice magic. Some pureblood families even hold prejudices and dislike of half-breeds: centaurs, werewolves, merpeople, ect.

However, there are pureblood families who do not have these prejudices. Instead, they treat all magical and non-magical people as equals. These more moral pureblood folk are often labeled "blood traitors" by the more fanatical purebloods. Unfortunately, it is all quite sad, these prejudices.

They're unnecessary and barbaric. In theory (and from what I've also taught in WMMC I), when you break human beings down to the bear essentials, we are programmed to survive. The human survival instinct is the strongest drive in us, once you break past the more modern mindset that is. Yet, pureblood families and those pureblood Death Eaters ignore this survival concept and end up destroying their own race. Although, purebloods don't considers those lesser families to be noble enough to perform magic. Thus, in hindsight, their logic is understandable, but when their races dwindles and begins to lose the prominence of former glory days, they'll begin to realize their flaws and where they went wrong along the way. However, that all might be wishful thinking.

We're going to branch off onto a side-thought for a brief moment. I would like you all to think about what we know of magical and muggle interactions. Obviously, as stated above, a good few magical families view muggle and magical relations to be a joke and a disgrace to their magical heritage. So, continuing with this thought, would it be possible for magical families of high ranking status in the magical world, and among the Ministry of Magic, to abuse their power and take advantage, even harm, muggles by those means? Abusing their position in the magical community, using it for their own personal gain is not uncommon and we will discuss this thought later on in the class.

Moving on to the stereotypes and ideas that swarm around muggleborns and half-bloods. It is said that those witches and wizards who are muggle born have less capacity to perform magic, since their predominant blood lineage is muggle. However, this is a myth and a stereotype.

As demonstrated by Hermione Granger, who is an absolutely brilliant witch and muggle born. She demonstrated her supreme control and powerful magic during the second reign of Lord Voldemort. After his final fall, she moved on to working at the Ministry of Magic in the Departments for the Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures where she fought to improve the lives of house-elves. Then, she progressed into the Department of Magical Law Enforcement where she eradicated pro-pureblood laws. Magical capacity, in any witch or wizard, has never been able to be systematically measured. Thus, saying that a a muggleborn or a half-blood has less magical ability than a pureblood are false statements since there is no way to prove this. Then, with that, you move into potential. A half-blood might have the potential to be one of the most powerful wizards alive, but if he does not reach for the potential and unlock it, he still remains with the less skilled of the magical folk.

The only remaining branch of the Wizarding world left to discuss are Squibs. Squibs are those individuals from Wizarding linage and families who are born without the ability perform magic. The reason why Squibs exists isn't exactly know. It probably rests with the same genealogical mishap that leads to muggleborn witches and wizards. Unfortunately, there isn't a foolproof method to reveres being born a Squib. Courses, such as Kwikspell, exists to try and release to magical potential in Squibs, but no one truly knows if those courses actually work or if it's just another mental mind trick preying on the hope of those who wish to be more than what they were born as. Of course, Squibs are also looked down upon as being “unnatural” and “tainted” since they lack their birthright magical powers. Courses like Kwikspell are only for adult Squibs.

Now, it is time to ask why this this hate of muggles and halfbloods, even half-breed, exists. And, if there is such discord against non-magical people, why doesn't Ministry of Magic do something more significant about it? Yes, the ministry has a Misuse of Magical Artifacts office, the Improper Use of Magic offices, and the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Charms, but, realistically what are these minor offices going to do? This thought will also be discussed further in the next lesson.

Honestly, the existence of this prejudice and hate is impossible to pinpoint. Why do prejudice and discord exist? Misunderstanding, fear, ignorance? Any explanation is possible. The only things left for us to do is do delve deeper into the past and examine the extenuating circumstances.

However, we must conclude this lesson. If you would continue on to your assignment, I am much looking forward to your opinions.

Above is an elaborate depiction of the Black Family Tree. You know, the one where Sirius' mom burned people off of it.
